Titleist Pro V1 vs TaylorMade TP5: Which Golf Ball Is Better?

4 min read

If you're choosing between the Titleist Pro V1 and TaylorMade TP5, you're comparing two of the biggest names in premium golf balls.

Both are designed to deliver performance from tee to green. Both use premium urethane covers. Both offer excellent feel and control. But they aren't the same golf ball.

The Pro V1 uses a three-piece construction and has built its reputation around all-round consistency, a penetrating flight and soft feel.

The TP5 takes a five-layer approach and offers TaylorMade's own combination of speed, spin and soft feel.

So which should you play?

Pro V1 vs TP5: The Quick Answer

Choose the Pro V1 if you want: a proven all-round premium ball, soft feel and a controlled, penetrating flight.

Choose the TP5 if you want: a soft premium ball with five-layer construction and access to visual options such as TP5 Stripe and Pix.

Neither is automatically better. The best choice depends on what you prefer to see and feel from your golf ball.

Titleist Pro V1

Few golf balls need less introduction than the Pro V1. For more than two decades, it has been one of the benchmark premium balls in golf.

The modern Pro V1 is designed to provide a combination of distance, controlled long-game spin, a penetrating trajectory and high levels of control around the greens.

Perhaps its biggest strength is that it isn't trying to be a specialist ball. It's an all-rounder. Driver, irons, wedges and putter are all part of the equation.

TaylorMade TP5

The TP5 is TaylorMade's answer to the premium tour-ball category. Its biggest technical difference from the Pro V1 is immediately obvious once you look inside:

the TP5 uses five layers rather than three.

Those layers allow TaylorMade to tune different areas of performance while maintaining the soft premium feel for which the TP5 has become known.

There is another reason golfers are increasingly drawn to the TP5 family: choice.

Alongside the standard ball, TaylorMade has created distinctive versions including TP5 Pix and TP5 Stripe.

Which Is Longer: Pro V1 or TP5?

There isn't one golf ball that will be longer for every golfer. Distance depends on your swing speed, launch, spin, strike and club delivery.

One player could produce better numbers with the Pro V1 while another could see better results from the TP5. That's why we'd be wary of choosing solely because someone online tells you one is longer. Test them with your own swing.

Which Has More Spin?

Both are urethane-covered premium balls built to offer substantial short-game control. Exactly how much spin you generate will depend on the shot, your delivery, club, turf conditions and the particular generation of each ball.

The useful question isn't which ball spins more. It's which ball gives you the flight and stopping power you want.

Which Feels Better?

This is entirely personal. Some golfers love the feedback of a Pro V1. Others immediately prefer the TP5.

You can read every compression figure and test result available and still discover that your preference changes after five minutes on the putting green. Feel is one area where testing the golf ball yourself really matters.

Pro V1 vs TP5 for Mid Handicappers

Both are perfectly suitable for a mid-handicap golfer. In fact, golfers beginning to improve their wedge play and distance control may start noticing the benefits of playing a consistent premium ball more than they did previously.

The bigger issue can be price. Losing premium golf balls at brand-new prices isn't particularly enjoyable.

The Smart Way to Test Pro V1 vs TP5

Buy them used. A high-quality used Pro V1 or TP5 gives you the opportunity to test premium golf balls on the course without spending the same amount as buying multiple boxes new.

Play a couple of rounds with each. Hit the same chips. Pay attention to iron flight. Compare putting feel. Then make your decision based on your golf game rather than marketing.

At ReUse Golf Balls, we stock both used Titleist Pro V1 golf balls and used TaylorMade TP5 golf balls, including different model generations and grades where available.

Our Verdict: TP5 or Pro V1?

There isn't a universal winner. We'd start with the Pro V1 if you want a benchmark premium all-rounder with a soft feel and controlled flight.

We'd start with the TP5 if you want premium TaylorMade performance, five-layer construction and the option of visual designs such as Stripe. If you're still undecided, try both.

Is TP5 better than Pro V1?

Neither golf ball is objectively better for every golfer. Both are premium urethane golf balls. The right choice depends on your swing, preferred feel, flight and short-game performance.
