What Are Lake Balls?
A lake ball is an original golf ball that has been recovered from water after being lost during play. It is then cleaned and assessed for condition. Some golfers use “lake balls” and “used golf balls” interchangeably because many balls sold on the secondary market are recovered from course water hazards.
How Lake Balls Are Recovered, Cleaned and Graded
Recovered balls are collected in bulk, washed to remove dirt and residue, sorted by brand and exact model, and inspected for cuts, heavy wear, discolouration and markings. The important stage is grading: balls that look close to new should not be mixed with visibly worn practice balls.

Do Lake Balls Perform Like New?
The honest answer depends on grade, not simply on the word “lake”. A clean Mint or Grade A ball with its original cover intact is a very different proposition from a heavily worn ball with cuts or severe discolouration. That is why buying from a seller with clear, model-specific grading is safer than buying an ungraded mixed bag.

Lake Balls vs Used vs Refurbished
“Used golf ball” is the broadest term: it means a ball has been played before. “Lake ball” normally means the ball was recovered from water. The categories therefore overlap. “Refurbished” or “refinished” is different because the ball may have been stripped, repainted or reprinted rather than sold in its original visible condition.
